Work Experience
Hello Parents of Grade 10 and 11 students,
I wanted to thank you again for all your support in making this year’s WEX Week such a success. King’s sees the value in offering students this meaningful, hands-on opportunity to explore career options and has decided to continue WEX Week for all Grade 10, 11, and 12 students every year. I have shared this with the students and am encouraging them to start thinking about next year’s placements. Please continue conversations at home and let me know if there are any ideas or opportunities you would like to explore.
As we approach summer, it is a great time to consider extra credit opportunities. Although these experiences are optional, they do help students build valuable work and service skills, while also strengthening resumes and applications for post-secondary programs and scholarships. Below are some options that are available. Let me know by June 8 if your student is interested, as there are some initial assignments that need to be completed before summer hours can count.
- WEX12A (Work Experience Course)
Students can complete WEX12A, which requires 90 hours of work experience. Many students have already completed 20–40 hours during WEX Week.- For new placements, the initial paperwork must be completed and submitted to me by June 11.
- Students who complete WEX12A will have their future WEX Weeks applied to WEX12B.
- Global and Intercultural Studies (Online Course)
The Key Learning Centre offers a course requiring 60 hours of volunteer/service work. This is an excellent option for students volunteering at places such as hospitals, Bible camps, VBS, soccer camps, or similar opportunities.- Assignment #1 must be completed before hours can be counted.
- Students participating on the mission team next year are encouraged to wait and complete this course next year with their hours from the mission trip.
- Apprenticeship Opportunities
Students interested in pursuing an apprenticeship are encouraged to begin seeking a sponsor.- Sponsors must hold a Red Seal certification or have at least 15 years of experience in their trade.
- If a student begins working as an apprentice over the summer, have them connect with me in the fall so we can register them in the corresponding high school elective courses.
I wish you all a wonderful summer. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
